I am Indy: But not in Edmonton

Shortly before bed last night I heard that Dean McNulty at the Toronto Sun had reported that the Edmonton Indy was dead in the water. McNulty has been known to jump the gun on occasion. He has also been known to be wrong on occasion. I went to bed and thought nothing more of it.

This morning, I awoke to have a look at my twitter feeds and saw the following gem from Paul Tracy:
“had a real hard time sleeping last night , this edmonton race cancel has f,ed things up for my sponsors”

Hmmm – this warrants a bit of investigation.

The IndyCar website shows no news of Edmonton at this time and the 2011 schedule that is posted still shows Edmonton on the roster.

A 6:22 am post by Dan Barnes & Conal Pierse at the Edmonton Journal says the city is indeed done with the Indy event. Not suprisingly, it all comes down to money. The event loses it and the politicians say the public don’t want to keep paying it. It all seems like rather simple economics.

What is not so simple is the politics behind all of it, nor is it clear what exactly the organizers have as a back up plan. It is said that the promoters, Octane Management, are working hard to find a new venue for the 2012 season.

Here’s a suggestion: Mosport
