Introducing Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, formerly known as Mosport

Since Ron Fellows and friends bought the iconic Mosport International Raceway, there have been many changes at the track. Most of those changes have been expected and were a long time coming. Today’s news was massively unexpected!

Mosport International Raceway will now be called Canadian Tire Motorsport Park!

The track has formed a partnership with the Canadian automotive retail giant, which includes the name change. While some of the elder race fans will not be happy with the change, it seems fitting that a company with such a strong motorsports history in Canada should help usher in a new era at the track.

Fans can meet with Ron Fellows in the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park booth this weekend at the Canadian Motorsports Expo.

CANADIAN TIRE REVS UP ITS COMMITMENT TO RACING FANS

Canadian Tire partners with Mosport International Raceway

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario (February 10, 2012) Canadian Tire today announced a long term partnership with Mosport International Raceway, a renowned racing facility located in Bowmanville, Ontario. The track will be renamed Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. As part of a commitment to further establishing itself as Canada’s automotive authority, Canadian Tire is increasing its investment to support motorsports in Canada through this partnership.

“As Canada’s largest automotive retailer, Canadian Tire has a long tradition of supporting auto racing and motorsports in Canada,” said Allan MacDonald, Senior Vice President, Automotive. “Canadian Tire is excited to give back to the racing community by working with Mosport International Raceway to improve this racing landmark in Canada and create an enhanced experience for both drivers and fans.”

Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is home to some of the biggest races in Canada, hosting the only Canadian stop for North America’s premiere sports car championship – the American Le Mans Series. The facility will also host two races in the 2012 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

“We are thrilled to partner with Canadian Tire, an important supporter of Mosport and auto racing fans for many years. Together we’re building a world-class facility that will draw racing enthusiasts and grow our fanbase which continues to evolve year over year,” said Myles Brandt, President and General Manager of Mosport International Raceway.

Support from Canadian Tire will continue to help upgrade the facility and improve the experience for spectators, participants, race teams and corporate partners. Spectators and fans will be able to see the improvements first-hand at the Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend, which also kicks off the start of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

The new partnership is one of many initiatives that showcase Canadian Tire’s commitment to its automotive customers. Last year Canadian Tire launched a new automotive concept store in four different locations as well as the online tires and wheels store allowing customers to make informed tire purchases from their home. Canadian Tire also launched the all-new Driver Magazine, which is poised to become one of Canada’s leading resources for all things automotive. The third issue of Driver is slated to launch this April.

Canadian Tire named title sponsor for Grand-Am race at The Glen

Since Ron Fellows and his partners purchased Mosport, there have been many rumblings, mostly positive, about the what changes would come to the track and how this would impact Canadian motorsport. The changes within the motorsport world are coming fast and hopefully indicate that the changes are going to be felt far beyond Ontario.

It was announced yesterday afternoon that automotive and home repair retail giant Canadian Tire has been named as the title sponsor of this weekend’s GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series race during the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen.

Why is this such significant news for Canadian motorsport? Perhaps the answer lies in the press release:
“Watkins Glen International is a destination for so many passionate Canadian race fans making this a perfect partnership,” said Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen International. “WGI is recognized as the premier road racing facility in North America making us the perfect platform for Canadian Tire to connect not only with fans from Upstate New York but across the entire United States. We are thrilled to have them join our family of incredible partners and look forward to another electrifying night of racing by Scott Pruett, Max Angelelli, David Donohue, and the rest of the GRAND-AM Rolex Series.”

“As Canada’s authority in all things automotive, Canadian Tire has a long history of supporting automotive racing and motorsports in Canada,” said Allan MacDonald, senior vice-president, automotive. “On August 13, we are proud to extend our support across the border at Watkins Glen International by sponsoring the Canadian Tire 200. Through our sponsorships we help bring the excitement of professional racing to Canadian racing fans and automotive enthusiasts.”

So the public line is that we are to believe that the Canadian Tire is spending a whack of cash to market to a few hundred (thousand??) Canadians that made the quick jaunt to the Finger Lakes region for a single race weekend? Personally, I think one might be a tad naive if one believed that.

With the lone exception of possibly Players Tobacco, no other company has played as significant a role in Canadian Motorsport history as has Canadian Tire. While they have remained involved with the NASCAR series, the brand’s presence has not been felt as strongly in road racing in recent years. With the new partnership at Mosport, that has changed almost immediately.

Charting the changes

A few weeks ago at the Grand Prix of Mosport, Canadian Tire’s presence was a late announcement that included some branding around the track, but most importantly was the addition of 3 giant TV screens around the track. These “Jumbotron” type screens had a huge impact on fans at the track, who could now see so much more of the race.

Shortly afterwards came the news that Canadian Tire would be supporting Fellow’s efforts in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at The Glen and in Montreal.

Then, there is the news of the sponsorship of the Grand-Am race supporting the NNS event.

Putting it all together

Many of those positive rumblings I mentioned earlier have included musings about the possible return of GRAND-AM making a return to Mosport. Some have even gone out on a limb and suggested that a Mosport round might be put on the Nationwide Series schedule.

All of the recent involvement of Canadian Tire with Mosport, Fellows and now GRAND-AM would certainly point to big developments in the future. The choice of venues makes sense as these partnerships will prime American race fans for a possible trip north to watch a big race at Canada’s most historic race track.

What do you think? Will we see Canadian Tire, GRAND-AM and maybe even the Nationwide Series at Mosport next year?

Fellows and Canadian Tire Return to NNS Competition with JR Motorsports

Team press release

Road-Course Veteran to Drive No. 5 Chevrolet at Watkins Glen and Montreal

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 5, 2011) – JR Motorsports announced today the return of two critical components to its road-course program – driver Ron Fellows and sponsor Canadian Tire. Fellows, a previous winner for JR Motorsports, will drive the No. 5 Chevrolet in NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) events at Watkins Glen International (Aug. 13) and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Aug. 20) with Canadian Tire as the team’s primary sponsor for both events.

Fellows finished second at Road America on June 25th for JR Motorsports. The No. 5 Canadian Tire team will give JRM three entries in both of the remaining road-course events. Aric Almirola will drive the No. 88 Chevrolet in both races. Jimmie Johnson will drive the No. 7 at Watkins Glen in a one-race deal announced Tuesday, and Danica Patrick will take over the No. 7 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Canadian Tire is the largest automotive retailer in Canada with more than 480 stores. The retailer first graced the panels of Fellows’ JR Motorsports Chevrolet at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2010.

“Canadian Tire has a long history of supporting racing and motor sports in Canada,” said Allan MacDonald, senior vice-president, automotive. “We are proud to support Canadian racing legend, Ron Fellows, both at home and across the border this summer. We wish Ron the best of luck at Watkins Glen International and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.”

Fellows, a native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, has remarkably scored top-five finishes in four of his seven career races with JRM. In 2008 he earned the team its first road-course victory at Montreal, leading seven laps en route to an emotional win. In 19 career Nationwide Series road-course races, he has four wins, nine top-fives, 11 top-10s and two poles.

“It has been great fun driving for JRM on the road courses,” Fellows said. “I have really enjoyed working with the Eurys as well. We’re all looking forward to picking up where we left off at Road America. Having Canadian Tire on board for both Watkins Glen and Montreal is a bonus, particularly with the number of Canadian fans who make the trip to Watkins Glen.”

Just as he did at Road America, Tony Eury Jr. will serve as Fellows’ crew chief at Watkins Glen. The duo nearly won the first road-course race of the year, but a NASCAR ruling after the checkered flag correctly relegated the pair to second place.

A longtime sports car and road-racing veteran, Fellows is credited with three class championships in the American Le Mans Series, two class wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and 19 overall victories in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am Series as a member of the Corvette Racing Team. His NASCAR credentials include six overall wins (two in the Camping World Truck Series), and two runner-up finishes in Sprint Cup competition.
